CRITICAL THEORY: CHENGDU REVIEW JOURNAL
Sichuan University
Critical Theory: Chengdu Review is a biannual Chinese journal founded by the Marxist Literary Theory Research Center of the College of Chinese Language and Literature at Sichuan University. The journal is dedicated to compiling representative works from global critical theory, integrating the critical spirit of Chinese culture with that of the West. In the inaugural issue, Professor Fu Qilin of Sichuan University published an introduction entitled Toward a Critical Theory of the 21st Century. The article argues that critical theory in the 21st century represents a transformation of traditional critical theory, taking the form of a theoretical framework characterized by textuality, reality, historicity and sensibility. It also argues that 21st century critical theory research must achieve “four imperatives”: first, it must return to the authentic texts of Marx’s MEGA [Marx-Engels Gesamtausgabe], revitalizing the critical weapons forged by Marx; second, it must confront the new actuality, opening up the global space for critical theory; third, it must engage with the new traditions rich in critical spirit, which enlarges the historical span of critical theory; fourth, it must integrate new sensibilities, characterized by infinite possibilities and multiple crises, thereby deepening the qualitative connotation of critical theory.
