INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MARXIST CRITICAL THEORY IN EASTERN EUROPE

Sichuan University

The “International Conference on Marxist Critical Theory in Eastern Europe” (ICMCTEE) is a biennial international conference hosted by the College of Chinese Language and Literature at Sichuan University and co-sponsored by Thesis Eleven journal. The first conference of this series was held in 2018, bringing together over 90 scholars from around the world. Ágnes Heller, a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Hannah Arendt Chair Professor of Philosophy, delivered a keynote speech titled Lukács and Tolstoy at the first conference. Presentations were also delivered by dozens of other internationally renowned scholars, including Galin Tihanov, Peter Beilharz, and Peter Steiner. The second, third, fourth, and fifth international conferences of this series were themed around “In Memory of Ágnes Heller” (2020), “In Memory of György Márkus” (2022), “In Memory of Zygmunt Bauman” (2024), and “Social Modernization and Cultural Modernity” (2026). Throughout these conferences, simultaneous interpretation between Chinese and English was provided, and conference proceedings totaling hundreds of pages were published, which showcases the latest achievements in Marxist critical theory and literary aesthetics.
