International Society for Psychoanalysis and Philosophy

The creation of the International Society for Psychoanalysis and Philosophy (ISPP) was prompted by a convergence of research projects that were begun independently in different places. These projects came together not only on the occasion of conferences in Brazil, England, France, the Netherlands and the United States, but also through exchanges that were linked to joint Ph.D. projects. The ISPP brings together practicing psychoanalysts who are also philosophers–whether because of their previous education or because of their professional activities–and philosophers who find possible sources for the renewal of contemporary thought in the work of Sigmund Freud and his successors.

An international confrontation with shared problematics in this field has shown us that some countries—meaning certain intellectual contexts—have allowed for the development of a range of relations between psychoanalysis and philosophy and between philosophy and psychoanalysis. Similarly, in some countries, clinical psychoanalysis, academic research, and medical practice remain closely related. These reflections gave rise to the meetings and conferences that we convened in an effort to respond to the need for a more coherent organization that would support our field.

Today the ISPP seeks to facilitate academic exchanges of Ph.D. students and post-doctoral researchers, and it hopes to benefit from the conversations made possible by the fact that its participants are based in very different places, including Sao Paolo, Tokyo, Nijmegen, Leuven, New York, Mexico City, and Paris. In our view, this is not just an external circumstance, but an indication of the fact that the contemporary history of our societies shapes the relations between psychoanalysis and philosophy from within. The ISPP is a bilingual society (working in English and French) that is also open to participants who speak other languages, including Spanish and Portuguese.

In addition to organizing international conferences, the ISPP actively encourages the foundation of local and regional networks of groups and individuals that are interested in the relations between psychoanalysis and philosophy.
