Forum on Contemporary Theory

The Forum on Contemporary Theory is a non-profit organization devoted to interdisciplinary dialogue on a broad range of conceptual topics of contemporary relevance. It is registered as a public trust and society in Baroda (Gujarat, India) and is governed by a Board of Trust comprising distinguished scholars from Baroda. In 1989, the Forum started as an informal institution in the Faculty of Arts of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. It has now acquired global visibility through its academic programs and publications. The Forum has established a research center, the Centre for Contemporary Theory, with the support of a grant from the Ford Foundation. The Centre has a library devoted to theory in the humanities and social sciences and other allied disciplines to enable interdisciplinary research. The membership of the Forum is spread across the globe. It offers temporary student membership, temporary non-student membership, life membership, and corporate membership. The Forum organizes an annual international conference, a national workshop, a month-long Theory/Praxis course, and occasional talks by visiting scholars. It also publishes a biannual journal, entitled Journal of Contemporary Thought, a biannual newsletter, and a conference volume once a year.

The Forum became a Member of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI) in 2014 and is the only association from India and South Asia that has joined the CHCI. The Forum has held a long association with the International Lincoln Center at Louisiana State University in Shreveport (USA) for the publication and organization of conferences. Periodic collaboration with the University of North Texas, Denton (USA) and New York University (USA) have also been established. Over the years, the Forum has also collaborated with many Indian universities in organizing conferences and workshops. Recently, the Forum joined the Princeton African Humanities Colloquium at Princeton University ( USA) for its Twentieth International Conference to be held at Gopalpur-on-Sea, Odisha from the 17th to the 20th of December 2017. The theme of the conference is: “The Humanities across Cultures.”
