Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and Other Human Sciences
Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and Other Human Sciences was set up in Baroda in 2009 with the generous support provided by Shri Balvant Parekh, the Chairman of Pidilite Industries, Mumbai, and his family. Its aims and objectives are to promote the study of general semantics and other human sciences in India. The Centre is registered as a charitable trust under the provisions of Bombay Public Trusts Act of 1950 and administered by a Board of Trust with members from diverse background. It houses a library and reading room, a conference hall, a seminar room, and an administrative office. It shares these facilities with the Centre for Contemporary Theory, which is also involved in academic activities of an interdisciplinary nature. Both Centres work together in close proximity and cooperation and complement each other through their programs.
The Balvant Parekh Centre organizes programs aimed at knowledge production and dissemination in general semantics and the human sciences. Scholars and students from different parts of the world have benefitted from the Centre’s programs of the Centre. Our regular events include the annual Balvant Parekh Memorial Lecture and Symposium, the Balvant Parekh Distinguished Lecture series, an annual General Semantics Workshop, and a seminar series on «enigmas.» In addition to these events, we have organized two international conferences, occasional certificate courses, workshops on other themes, seminars on general semantics, and programs in regional languages. Except for the lecture series, most of our programs are organized jointly with a college or university. The Centre has nodal centers at CHM College, Mumbai; Saurashtra University, Rajkot; Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat; Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar; and Jaipur National University, Rajasthan. These nodal centres also organize events independently and in collaboration with Balvant Parekh Centre.
The Centre’s publications include books on general semantics and related areas, the Memorial Lecture booklets, a newsletter and annual report, and Anekaant: A Journal of Polysemic Thought, a bi-annual, refereed, international journal, which brings out both special issues and general issues.
