Sociology and Human Sciences Department
University of Plovdiv “Paisii Hilendarski”
The Sociology and Human Sciences Department was established as a critical sociology department, inspired by the thinking of Bourdieu, Derrida, Foucault, and Deleuze, in a critical dialogue with Garfinkel’s ethnomethodology and Sacks’ conversation analysis. The work of the department is focused on the facing the challenges of what is to-come, when neither society nor critique will remain the same. The two main directions for our scholarly investigations and curriculum post-Bourdieusian socio-analysis and the problematization of contemporary bio- and anatomo-politics of supermodern capitalism.
Our B.A. program has two modules: “Bio-politics and Insecurity” and “Socio-analysis and Psychoanalysis.” Our M.A. program offerings include “Bio-politics and Social Health” and “Socio-analysis and Interpersonal Relations.” We cooperate with the Institute for Critical Social Research at the University of Plovdiv and the Institute for Critical Theories of Supermodernity (where students from our excellence program and some of our Ph.D. students specialize). Together with these two institutes, we formed what we called the “’Critique and Humanism’ Academic Rhizome” (for we believe that academic life also can be rhizomatic).
We are open to all forms of critical dialogue associated with the problems that would be of common interest for the critical sociology, and we intend to invite various scholars from different disciplines to participate in such dialogues. Due to the economic situation in Bulgaria, at the present stage it is impossible for the department to provide scholarship grants. However, we plan to offer a M.A. degree in English by the end of 2018, and we would like to invite all students who may be interested.
