M.A. in Critical Theory and Cultural Studies

University of Nottingham

This dynamic and interdisciplinary M.A. provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the critical tradition that shapes today’s human and social sciences, as well as the opportunity to apply theories to contemporary cultural and political phenomena. It is delivered through the Centre for Critical Theory which builds on over 30 years of research excellence in this field at the University of Nottingham.

Students therefore benefit from teaching by staff with recognised expertise in areas such as cultural studies, media studies, continental philosophy, political theory, postcolonialism, gender studies, psychoanalysis, and literary theory.

The content of the program is at once historical, thematic and contemporary, covering German and French strands of critical theory but also situating them in relation to British cultural studies with an emphasis on the concrete application of theory. Core modules are likely to include:

• Critical and Cultural Theory Today
• Aesthetics and Politics
• Tradition of Critique 1: From Kant to Habermas
• Theory at Work: Problematising the Present
• Transformations in Technology and Communications
• Tradition of Critique 2: From Lacan to Haraway
• A 20,000 word Dissertation in Critical Theory and/or Cultural Studies

Students of this M.A. join a thriving research community associated with the Centre for Critical Theory, which organizes visiting speaker series, workshops and conferences with high levels of postgraduate student participation.

Competitive master’s studentships are available for strong candidates, and the M.A. has an excellent track record of leading students both onto PhD’s and academic careers, and onto success in a variety of professional contexts, such as galleries, museums, journalism, publishing, and teaching.
