M.A. in Cultural and Critical Studies

Birkbeck University of London

The M.A. in Cultural and Critical Studies at Birkbeck College explores cultural debates in relation to questions of critical theory. The course is designed to provide a grounding in the theoretical debates, emergent from Marxism, feminism, and other strands of Critical Theorising. Areas of particular focus include criticism as practice, technology, globalisation, digitalisation, ideology, aesthetics, objecthood, tradition, social construction of space, questions of reification and fetishism, visual perception and technologies of the gaze, the politics of sexuality, the «everyday» and the «spectacle,» the organisation of knowledge, questions of high and low culture. Alongside a core course on critical theory and its concepts, students engage in modular option courses that draw on academics’ specialisms. Recent years have included Theory of Clouds, The Book Unbound, Exhibiting Cultures, Walter Benjamin’s Arcades, Thinking Time – Reading Time, Adorno’s Aesthetic Theory, Queer Histories – Queer Cultures, Aesthetics and Cultural Theory.
