Institute for Social Research and Cultural Studies

National Chiao Tung University

The Institute for Social Research and Cultural Studies (SRCS) was established in 2002 at National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, as an interdisciplinary research and teaching unit with Master’s and Ph.D. programs. The need for social research (inspired by Frankfurt School critical theory) and cultural studies (along with interdisciplinary or trans-disciplinary studies) motivated the institute’s academic foundation and its aim to foster a cross-boundary approach to the in-depth analysis of social thought, critical thinking, and cultural theory in a broad socio-historical context. SRCS offers theoretical courses involving contemporary continental political philosophy, as well as courses on thinkers from Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Projects undertaken for the SRCS’s Ph.D. and M.A. programs are characterized by their contextualized and historicized critical analysis and their interventions into historical and contemporary cultural and social problems, such as coloniality, (new) nationalism, (new) imperialism, neoliberalism, migrant workers, gender, race, and class, in Taiwan in particular as well as in East Asia more generally and in the global context. These projects can be broadly framed in the fields of politics, aesthetics, ethics, or social practice.
