Theory/Praxis Course

Forum on Contemporary Theory

The Forum on Contemporary Theory has been conducting an intensive Theory/Praxis Course annually since 2003 for the benefit of scholars across disciplines interested in new developments in theory and their application. The course includes intensive textual readings in specific areas, supported by seminars and talks on broader but related issues. The Course is usually organized around specific topics that are discussed in-depth by a core faculty, supported by public lectures and mini-seminars by invited scholars.

This is a major program organized by the Forum every year, and so far fourteen such courses have been conducted in various venues across India in collaboration with host institutions. The duration of the Course is four weeks, from mid-June to mid-July. Some of the distinguished scholars who have taught the Course include: Gayatri Spivak, Akeel Bilgrami, Arjun Appadurai, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, Michael Marder, Patricia Vieira, Rajeswari Sunder Rajan, Gaurav Desai, Dilip Gaonkar, R. Radhakrishnan, Costica Bradatan, Mohamed Mehdi, Sumathi Ramaswamy, Vicki Kirby, Sura P. Rath, Tejaswini Niranjana, Aditya Nigam, and Rashmi Dube Bhatnagar.

Participation in the Course is mainly open to scholars in the humanities and social sciences, preferably those working toward research degree, but post-graduate students and post-doctoral scholars in these disciplines and scholars from disciplines outside the humanities and social sciences interested in interdisciplinary studies can also apply. One of the distinctive features of the program is that the participants and faculty stay under one roof for the duration of the entire program; this arrangement makes the interaction between them outside the classroom more frequent and productive.

The 15th Theory/Praxis Course was be held in Hyderabad in collaboration with The English and Foreign Languages University from 3 July to 29 July 2017. Roland Greene from Stanford University and Galin Tihanov from the Queen Mary University of London taught the Course.
