NEXOS: Critical Theory and Interdisciplinary Research
NEXOS: Critical Theory and Interdisciplinary Research is a network for research and collective thinking founded in 2014. Our aim is to establish collaborations and partnerships across regional, national, and international spheres in order to produce methodological and theoretical knowledge in critical theory.
NEXOS includes four inter-institutional research groups located in Northeast, Midwest/North, Southeast, and South Brazil, connecting local, regional, and national researches across the country. Each local group is coordinated by a woman professor from a Brazilian public university and includes researchers, collaborators, and student groups at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.
Between 2014 and 2017, the network focused on research concerning digital culture and the authoritarian personality. During this period, NEXOS organized its First International Symposium and produced thematic dossiers, a collective book, public debate and interdisciplinary articles developed in collaboration with the Institute of Physics at the University of São Paulo (USP–São Carlos).
Between 2021 and 2023, the network dedicated itself to the dossier “Critical Theory and Gender,” expanding dialogues between philosophy, social sciences, and gender studies. https://periodicos.ufms.br/index.php/persdia/issue/view/718
Currently, the network does not operate through a single collective research agenda. Instead, each local group develops autonomous and situated investigations that articulate critical theory with education, social psychology, philosophy, ecology, and related fields. Alongside classical authors of critical theory, the network also engages with empirical research, translation practices, decolonial perspectives from the Global South, and interdisciplinary methodologies.
This configuration gives NEXOS a distinctive character, moving beyond the mere reproduction of canonical methodologies and fostering situated approaches to contemporary social problems. Across the different groups, research themes include authoritarianism, gender violence, racism, ideology of technology, ecology, diffractive pedagogical practices, and field research.
