Critical Social Theory

University of Essex

We are a leading centre for Critical Social Theory in the United Kingdom with six members of academic staff working on the Frankfurt School (Adorno, Habermas, Honneth), contemporary French thought (Derrida, Foucault, Rancière) and issues in Critical Social Theory, such as activist political theory, deliberative democracy, and the moral limits of markets.

We offer a Ph.D. program and also a dedicated pathway in our M.A. in Philosophy. For pathway recognition in Critical Social Theory students must take the following modules:

The Frankfurt School (PY952)
Contemporary Critical Theory (PY948)
Four other philosophy modules or approved outside Options (max 30 credits)
Dissertation in Critical Social Theory (PY983)

We also offer undergraduate modules in Critical Theory.
