Consortium for Black Studies in California

University of California, Irvine

This center recognizes that for the past thee generations, since the 1960s, the elaboration and confluence of traditions of thought from across the African Diaspora, Africa in the global sense, the South Asian subcontinent, Asia in general, and a multiply-referenced “America,” from South America to Asian America and Native America, have been constituent components in the development of critical discourses in the humanities, notably at the University of California, Irvine. These traditions now solicit a new, sufficiently supple yet also stable institutional articulation commensurate with their renascent and now fundamental and perennial status. Our center thus puts this understanding into programmatic action centered on research clusters or workshops, focused in their initial formulations by initiatives in three areas: science, technology and race; critical historiography and social theoretical inquiry; and questions elaborated under the headings of «Blackness» and «the Asian century.» Questions of feminism, notably «Black Feminisms,» form core references across all three present workshop formations in the center at UC Irvine.
