Institute for Critical Social Inquiry

New School for Social Research

Housed at The New School for Social Research in New York City, the Institute for Critical Social Inquiry (ICSI), founded and directed by Ann Laura Stoler, offers advanced graduate students and faculty from around the world a weeklong Fellowship in which they work closely with eminent scholars who have shaped how we think today. Born of The New School’s historic focus on exploring pressing contemporary issues, the ICSI is designed to cultivate a style of critical inquiry that applies conceptual care and innovation to real-world problems. ICSI provides a rare opportunity for young and seasoned scholars to pursue this charge by re-immersing themselves in intensive graduate-level study in one of three week-long seminars that address the disparate sites and unequal conditions in which we live. Each seminar meets separately for a three-hour Master Class in the mornings; afternoons are spent either workshopping Fellows’ current research with their respective seminar group or in Public Forums, where the entire cohort meets to discusses themes that cut across common concerns and to help shape the design of ICSI.
