Totality, Critique, and Deconstruction

Universidad de Buenos Aires

This project aims to reconstruct and critically analyze the ethical-political dimensions of the theoretical-philosophical problem of totality in Frankfurt School and in (post)structuralist thought, focusing on the subject of democracy. Starting with a systematic study of the works of Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, and Jürgen Habermas, on the one hand, and Louis Althusser, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault and Gilles Delouse, on the other, we intend to trace theoretical debates between these traditions on the ethical-political problems of contemporary social world, and to formalize a critique of both intellectual currents in order to overcome their limitations and partialities. The general aim we pursue through this articulation of related critical traditions is to contribute to a re-elaboration of the concept of democracy capable of dealing with the current dilemmas of Latin America’s politics.
