The Dullah Omar Centre for Critical Thought in African Humanities

University of the Western Cape

The Dullah Omar Centre for Critical Thought in African Humanities (DOCCTAH) is a public lecture program of the Dullah Omar Foundation formed in partnership with the Centre for Humanities Research Flagship project at the University of Western Cape in South Africa. Building on the intellectual legacy of Dullah Omar, the project seeks to establish an ongoing public lecture series in Athlone aimed at bringing together humanities scholars and the public intellectuals in Athlone and surrounding areas.

With the support of the Dullah Omar Foundation, the National Research Foundation, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, DOCCTAH hosts local and international scholars and artists to present lectures on their current research and work to non-specialist audiences. The lecture series carries forward the best traditions of knowledge on the Cape Flats that proved indispensable to unraveling the legacies of race and authoritarianism in the 1970s and 1980s. DOCCTAH seeks to encourage debate and discussion on key questions of our contemporary world, while asking for a concerted effort aimed at building new models of public deliberation.

The project strives to give meaning to Dullah Omar’s life-long ambition to undo the racially stratified urban planning of apartheid. The lecture series works towards facilitating dialogue among the residents of Athlone, Gugulethu, Heideveld and Langa through a focused educational program on the making of a post-apartheid society.
