The Centre for Contemporary Theory was set up in 2005 with generous support from the Ford Foundation. It operated from a rented building until 2009, when it moved to its own premises in a commercial building in Faramji Road, Baroda. It shares its facilities and staff with the Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and Other Human Sciences, its sister organization. The floor space of the entire complex is 7, 500 square feet and houses a library with 15,000 of the latest books, most of them interdisciplinary in nature and pertaining to theory and its applications. This is perhaps the largest collection of books of this kind in India. The Centre has a spacious reading room that can accommodate around 60 readers at a time; two seminar/conference rooms; a room for administrative office and another for visiting scholars. It is managed by a staff of nine persons, who include Prof. Prafulla Kar (Director), Prof. Bishnu Mohapatra (Senior Academic Fellow), Dr. Bini B.S. and Dr. Ananya Ghoshal (Junior Academic Fellows), Mr. Piyush Thakkar and Mr. Udayprakash Sharma (Academic Associates), Mr. Ajay Menon (Fiscal and Administrative Officer), and two Attendants. One of the Academic Associates, Mr.Udayprakash Sharma, is currently looking after the libraries of both the Centres.
The Centre organizes scholars’ meetings and runs a film club. Every Friday, a scholars’ meeting takes place at the Centre in which a visiting scholar or fellow initiates a discussion on a specific topic. The distinctive feature of the Friday discussion program is that the graduate students and senior scholars from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda get opportunities to interact with the visiting scholars. For researchers, it is a good occasion to get the feedback on their ongoing work. Those who attend the program also get an opportunity to be familiar with the library resources of the Centre. The films screened by the Centre’s film club on Saturdays often complement the discussion at the Friday meeting. The Centre houses a collection of more than 500 films ranging from classics to new wave and parallel cinema, and it encourages discussion of films after screening as part of its effort to bring visual and verbal discourses together in critical exchange.
