Minor and Concentration in Gender Studies

American University of Central Asia (AUCA)

The Center for Critical Gender Studies at the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) offers a Minor in Gender Studies for all AUCA students as well as a Concentration in Gender Studies for all Liberal Arts & Sciences majors.

The Gender Studies Minor introduces students a broad range of theories, concepts, and cases that allow students to begin to understand the complex issues related to gender in society and how these differ across cultures, and provide students with a background in gender studies as a discipline. Students have the ability to choose from a large list of courses to complete the Minor, which offers each student the opportunity to focus on particular aspects of gender studies. Built into the Minor is the ability to do an Independent Study with a professor on a specific topic related to gender. This Minor will be particularly useful and interesting to students who wish to work in the field of international development, continue their studies by pursuing an M.A. or Ph.D., or work on gender-related issues.

While completing a Gender Studies Minor provides an analytical background along with critical and practical sociological skills, a Concentration in Gender Studies allows students to further develop these skills and their content knowledge, as well as to gain deeper specialization in the field. The Concentration involves more courses than the Minor, and it allows students to gain additional knowledge in the field of Liberal Arts. This makes it possible for students to enter M.A. programs in various liberal arts and social sciences fields, and it gives them supplementary knowledge in the field of Gender Studies specifically, which allows them to develop higher levels of criticality and deeper understandings of everyday life.

AUCA’s Liberal Arts Gender Studies Concentration is the first and the only undergraduate program of its type in Central Asia, offering a US-accredited degree through a partnership with Bard College. It is aimed at preparing young specialists with inter-disciplinary backgrounds in gender studies to serve not only in Central Asian institutions but also at the global level. The current prominence of gender issues and Gender Studies and the compelling need of the Kyrgyz and Central Asian communities for the experts in this particular field will enable the graduates of the program to be of vital importance not only in their local communities but in the region as well.
