Historical, Theoretical, and Critical Studies of Psychology

York University

The program in Historical, Theoretical, and Critical Studies of Psychology at York University reflects a vibrant interdisciplinary field dedicated to the history and philosophy of what it means to be human and how we can conceptualize subjectivity. We examine what kinds of knowledge have come to count in psychology and why, and the ethical questions that face the discipline. We contribute to and draw upon a variety of theoretical frameworks (feminist theory, critical theory, hermeneutics, etc.) and engage in contemporary methodological debates using a wide range of qualitative methods (archival research, oral history interviews, thematic analysis) and quantitative ones (social network analysis, web-scraping). In short, we study how psychology is shaped by society and how psychology has come to shape society.
